Like Father Like Son

As a child, my dad was fascinated by moving pictures. It was unlike anything he’d ever seen before! My grandparents tell us that upon coming home from the babysitter’s house (which had a TV) my dad would act out all the shows he saw on the television.

As he grew in age, his fascination continued to develop. At the age of 14, my dad took the family Super 8 video camera, his three siblings and created a handful of short films! Over the course of about a year, my dad and his siblings created five films in total including their own versions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Fighting Fists of Steel!

My dad then had children of his own, but the passion remained. As a result, his films took on a different format: documentaries. As I’m sure some of you can relate, my dad would film our family vacations, adventures, birthdays and celebrations of all kinds. I remember a video my dad made for Christmas one year. He had dressed up like Santa Claus and filmed the video to make it look like Santa Claus (my dad) had entered our home through the wall (we didn’t have a chimney)! I remember watching this video in awe and thinking to myself, “How did Santa Claus enter through the wall?”

Then, about 7 years ago, my brother and I had the opportunity to create our own documentary. We were embarking on our own first adventure – a motorcycle trip in the Alps. With two new GoPros, a passion blossomed within us! We captured almost every detail of the week long trip in the Alps as we came back with over 120GB of video. In the weeks after, I spent many hours editing a documentary of our trip and since then, through OneWay Media, we have created over 100 videos that have been seen by nearly 100,000 people! The five films my dad created had a total of 20 viewers. In one generation we have seen a 5,000 fold increase in viewership!

I say this not to brag about my accomplishments, but to show how far my dad’s dream and passion has come. Imagine if my dad never created those short films. I don’t think I would be writing this right now. OneWay Media wouldn’t even exist.

Similarly, I believe that God, as our Heavenly Father and Creator, has placed dreams, passions and desires in each and every single one of us that He wants us to run after because we will take them farther than if the dream had stayed in in His heart. God desires partnership and collaboration as we passionately pursue the dreams he has for us!

What are the dreams God has planted in you? Do they excite or intimidate you? What is one small thing you can start doing today to bring you closer to seeing those dreams fulfilled?

Be blessed.
