A couple of weeks ago, some of my cousins and I got together to spend a night bowling! It’s been a couple of months since we’ve seen each other, so it was great to spend time together.
Since we were playing a sport, I was keen to see how I would do compared to everyone else. If we’re honest, I wanted to have the highest score! Side note: when I was younger, I think some time in elementary school, I actually played on a bowling team! I don’t remember much from that time, but I do remember some of the form. I was sure to implement that in this night with my cousins!
I picked up my bowling ball, lined up on the lane and bowled the ball into the pins. After a handful of frames, I figured out something really important. When bowling the ball down the lane, it would usually go towards the area I was looking at. So, if I was looking at the center pin, most of the time the ball would hit the center pin. However, there were times when I would look down at the arrows at the beginning of the lane in front of me. Even if I focused on the center arrow at the beginning of the lane, when I looked up to see ball’s trajectory, it had veered to one of the sides. From that time, I did my best to focus on the center pin!
I think we all have areas in our lives where we focus on the wrong things. For instance, we focus so much on the problems, losing sight of the solutions, that we often feel like we aren’t making the progress we should. Or we spend all of our time focusing on a short term goal, instead of looking down the lane of our lives to see what long term goals are ahead of us.
Ultimately, there are times in life where life itself gets in the way of our most important focus, Jesus. We wake up, rush to get ready, drive to work, stress through the day, go home and plop on the couch only to go to bed and repeat the next morning. We don’t stop to give our focus and attention to the God that so dearly loves us.
So, what are you focusing on? What are you expending mental energy thinking about each day? Does that focus bring you life, encouragement and hope or does it bring worry, fear and axiety?
Take some time today, even if it it’s 30 seconds, to turn your attention and focus to Jesus. If your having trouble knowing what that looks like practically, just talk to God and tell Him you are thankful for His love. I wouldn’t be surprised if in that short time of shifting your focus, your day would be changed as it is reoriented towards its true purpose.
Be blessed.
If you were wondering, I didn’t get the highest score of the night 😦
