This is how it happened. I was up early last Thursday to drive my wife to the airport. That was the perfect excuse to, on the way back home, fly my drone and capture the sunrise with all of the fresh snow from the day before.
At the airport, I kissed my wife goodbye. Little did I know that, as my wife headed to a warm destination, I would spend an hour that morning walking though a field of snow looking for my beloved drone. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
On the way back home, I stopped in Washington Crossing, PA and send my flying friend into the sky. About 12 minutes into flight, I lose connection with the drone. This has happened plenty of times before and the solution has always been the same – wait a couple of minutes for the signal to reconnect! However, more than a couple of minutes went by and I still had no connection. I ran to my car and drove closer to where I thought the drone was. At that point, my controller reconnected and all I saw was the image above. My drone had crashed!
I quickly parked the car and figured out the rough location of the drone. According to my expert calculations, it was located in a massive evergreen tree farm. Uh oh! I walked up the driveway, explained my situation to the owner and began my search for the drone. Now my drone is about 12″ x 12″ in size. The field I was in was about 1/2 mile long by 1/4 mile wide and there were endless nooks and crannies my drone could have fallen in. Mind you this is like 6am and I’m walking through 8 inches of snow. It was the proverbial search for the needle in a haystack!
I literally walked around and prayed that God would help me find it! Finally after an hour of searching, I found my drone! It was on its back, on the edge of the farm, missing 2 of it’s 4 propellers and the other 2 were severally damaged. Nevertheless, I had found my drone!
After the incident, I thought about the whole experience. One of the main reasons I sought out my drone was because it was my only one. If I had 99 more drones at home would I still seek to find this one lost drone? I probably wouldn’t because, let’s be honest, I would have 99 others.
As I pondered this even further, I realized that the drone I crashed, carried unique information. On its micro SD card was crash footage! If I had 99 other drones, this crash footage is unique to this one drone. None of the others would have the same content. As a result, even if I had 99 other drones, I would leave all those to find the one crashed drone.
This insight gave me a new perspective on the parable of the lost sheep. Jesus uses this parable as a tool to describe the passionate love of God. In it, God is described as a father who would leave 99 of his sheep to seek and save one that is lost. Like my lost drone, the one lost sheep carries unique information and has unique story. None of the other 99 sheep can replace it. That is why God is so passionate in his pursuit of his lost sheep. They are irreplaceable to Him.
Have you ever felt lost? Have you ever felt like your life has crashed and is worthless? How does it feel knowing that God looks for you passionately? How does it feel knowing you are unique to Him?
Be blessed.
