In our culture, we love superheroes. One only needs to look at the top 10 performing movies of 2017 to see that five of them tell stories of superheroes. We love watching the battle between good and evil and seeing the superhero prevail. However, what happens when the hero doesn’t win? The movies work hard to make us believe that each individual is invincible, when in reality they are not. I understand these are fictional movies and story lines, but I think there are unique comparisons that can help us know God better.
Last night I had the honor of hanging out with Captain America, the Winter Soldier and the Black Panther. We were in an undisclosed location and I know what you’re thinking, “Yea, right. Only in your dreams!” And that’s correct! In my dream, I was with Captain America, the Winter Soldier and the Black Panther as they ran from a dangerous villain. They ran in fury and I watched as the villain killed each one of them. First, Captain America, then the Winter Soldier and finally, the Black Panther. The villain’s focus then shifted to other superheroes, namely, Thor and Spiderman. And get this, the villain knew what their weaknesses were and specifically targeted them. It wasn’t a good day for the Avengers to the say the least. Thankfully, a little while later, I woke up.
As I processed the events of the dream, I was a little disturbed. The villain knew the weaknesses of the superheroes and systematically disposed each one of them. Superheroes, even in their mighty strength, have weaknesses. They are all vulnerable to defeat.
I’m thankful that Jesus is not a superhero. I am thankful that He doesn’t have any weaknesses. Absolutely none to speak about. The only reason he was killed was because He chose to be, in order to save us. The true hero of the universe that has no weaknesses willingly died to save each one of us from the villain.
And, listen, it gets better! None of us are without weakness. We all have them, big and small, and God knows that. Thankfully, He gave us an amazing promise to address our weaknesses. Jesus, in 2 Corinthians 12:9, speaking to Paul, states how in our weakness, God’s power is made perfect. That power that Jesus lived with, the power that rose Him from the dead is made perfect in our places of weakness. Paul goes on to say, “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” Let us all respond like Paul.
Take some time today to thank the Lord that He has no weaknesses and that He is a strong and mighty God. Then reflect on the promise that in your weaknesses His power is made perfect. I’m sure you will be encouraged.
