Last week I found myself in a spiritual paradox. I was in my car, driving home from work, with a desire to pray, but, surprisingly, I found it very difficult to. I’m not sure what it was, but as I sat in my car, everything in my body didn’t want to pray. I forced a couple words of prayer out of my mouth, but it would just stop there.
When I arrived at home, I had been in the car for almost an hour. I got out of the car and started to unload various items. The unloading process required two trips and on my second trip back to the car, I felt a nudge of the Holy Spirit to go for a brief walk and get the rest of my things from the car later. Thankfully, I obliged and put my gloves on, zipped up my jacket and headed on a walk with God.
It sounds more spiritual that it is, as we just went around the block, but something profound happened. As I walked, the words of prayer just poured out of my mouth. It was like someone removed the plug, as I found it much easier to pray compared to when I was driving in the car. It was almost like as I moved my physical body through space and time, it enabled me to move my spiritual life forward. Going for a walk with God allowed me to connect with Him in a tangible and refreshing way that helped refocus my perspective and encourage me!
Looking back, I see the simple, yet profound effect of following the nudge of the Holy Spirit. The nudge always leads to deeper connection and relationship with God! It will never lead us astray or away from Him. I could of easily made up an excuse and said, “I’m too busy. I need to unload the car. I’m hungry. Maybe later…” and as a result, missed out on precious time with God. It wasn’t just about going on the walk and physically moving my body that enabled me to pray. It was about opening my heart to God and saying, “Yes, God, I will go on this walk with you. I will stop what I’m doing and make time for you.” We respond to Him, as scripture says, “We love because He first loved us,” (1 John 4:19).
I firmly believe that God gives these small invitations to all of us every single day. Do you see His invitations? If you do, how do you respond? What makes you respond the way you do? God is fully committed to growing His relationship with you. Are you?
