About a year ago, my brother and I took a road trip to see the Grand Canyon. We had a great time and I would definitely recommend putting the Grand Canyon on your bucket list, if it’s not already. Look at the picture above. What do you see? Perhaps you see the rocks, clouds and trees that I do. But look a little closer: where are some of the trees growing? Some trees are growing out of cracks in the rock, on the edge of massive cliffs! This, my friends, is a dangerous place to live! Yet dozens of trees have decided to set up shop and call this dangerous place home. Put yourself in the “shoes” (or umm “roots”) of one of those crack-dwelling trees. What would life be like for you? One loose foot step and woosh! Down the cliff side you go. You would probably live a very cautious and measured life, and that’s if you even survive! I understand that these trees don’t walk around and move, but still, they have made their home in a crack on the edge of a cliff and they are not just surviving, but they are thriving.
When I saw these trees in person, the reality of where these trees lived brought encouragement to me. I’m someone that’s not perfect and as a result, I have my fair share of “cracks.” Sometimes, I look down upon these cracks and believe that nothing good or no life can come from them. Seeing the trees above reframes my beliefs with the truth that God can bring life even in my cracks. And I can be sure that this life won’t be a mediocre life, but an abundant, thriving life, just as seen in those trees.
A number of years ago, I had a real challenge with deep existential questions. They were questions that I couldn’t answer and that didn’t really make any sense. Yet, the questions plagued me. I would consider these cracks. However, God is so awesome, that He’s shown me how my life is not based on my understanding or if I have all the answers, but rather on the firm and fruitful foundation that is Christ. This truth, I would say, is what it looks like to have abundant life in the “cracks”. It is extremely freeing! Those questions that once plagued me now roll off my back.
God brought life in the areas of my imperfection and He can do the same for you. In prayer, ask God to meet you in your “cracks” and to bring life there. It may be scary, but God is very gentle and a master gardener. He knows how to sow the seeds in the most precarious places that will bring abundant life!
