Have you ever seen someone else’s life and wished you were them? You saw their talent and skill set or their beauty and charisma and thought to yourself, “If only I was more like that person, then I would be ok.” If those thoughts have crossed your mind, don’t worry, it’s not only you. I’d like to suggest it happens to many of us, including myself, often more times than we like to admit, but that doesn’t mean we should let these thoughts stay around. In order for us to become all God has made us to be, we need to see ourselves as He does.

In the book of Psalms, the author David composed a song of reflection and praise in regards to his creator. He wrote in Psalm 139:13-14 the following:

For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

David recognized that God had created his inmost being, his deepest self and unique personality. It was this that led David to respond in praise because he saw that he was wonderfully made. David recognized that God did a good job when making him because all of God’s works are wonderful, David, being one of them.

This is how I apply this truth to my life. My name is Daniel Naum Lupco Balevski. My name is not LeBron James or Brad Pitt or Jimmy Fallon or Bill Gates. I’m unique and I have been uniquely made by the King of the universe. My personality and temperament along with my talents and skills were woven together on purpose to create me! Think about this, in all of history, there has never been another Daniel Naum Lupco Balevski. Even if there was someone who had my name, there has never been anyone in all of history that has the same combination of skills, talents, personality, experiences, looks or abilities. Looking forward, there will never, ever be anyone like me. Out of the about 106 billion people that have already lived on this earth and the 100 billion (or more) that will live on it in the future, there will only be one me. I am one in 200 billion! Why would I want to be anyone else? If I became like someone else, then there would be 2 of that person and I would be robbing God of a masterpiece that He created. This truth is simple, but it is profound, I was made to be me and you were made to be you!

When you look at your life, are you pleased with what you see or do you hear the voices that you should be more like _____________ (fill in blank)? If so, ask yourself the three questions below and you’ll start to see yourself as He does, 1 in 200 billion!

  1. What skills and talents has God given me?
  2. What do those skills and talents reveal about God as a creator?
  3. How can God use those skills and talents to make a difference in this world?
