The $7 Card

There are three things I do when I buy a card. First, I scan the covers looking for something that catches my eye. When I find that something, I slide the card out of its holder, open it up and begin to read. If a smile ensues, I know I found the right card. At that point, I proceed to turn the card to its back revealing the monetary fee necessary to obtain such witty words. To be blunt, I look at the card’s price and I either jump for joy or winch in pain. If the card is anything over $1.99 I will most likely never buy it. Call me cheap, but I have a hard time justifying spending four bucks on a piece of flashy paper that has a 95% chance of being thrown away.

Thankfully, not everyone thinks like me. About 2 months ago, I was promoted at work which was an awesome accomplishment for me. I had been working for nearly 2 years toward the promotion so actually getting it was gift enough. However, one of my colleagues gave me a card. I ripped open the envelope exposing the card’s very shiny cover. I flipped the cover over and found kind and encouraging words. Then I just happened to flip the card to the back and saw the price. I did a double take. The card was six dollars and ninety nine cents! My colleague bought me a SEVEN DOLLAR card! Who does that?

I was so taken back by this. I remember sitting in my chair and feeling so valued. I thought to myself, “Holy cow, my colleague values me enough to buy me a seven dollar card? No one has ever bought me a seven dollar card. They must really believe in me!” It really blew my mind.

I think this is God’s heart toward us. He wants us to know how much He values us. One of the most popular Bible verses is John 3:16 which states, “For God so dearly loved the world, that he GAVE his only son…(emphasis mine)” God loved and valued us and as a result he gave someone to us. The act of giving shows us value. What we are given shows us how valuable we are. What, then, does God giving his son for us say of our value? We must be highly valuable to God!

Take some time this week and ask God to show you your value. His heart is to do so!

Then, think of someone in your life that you value. How can you show them that they are valuable to you? Maybe like my colleague, through a super expensive card, or lending your ear for a chat, making a warm homemade dinner or even just a kind word of encouragement. Pick someone this week and show them that their life is valuable to you.
