I have an embarrassing story. I’ve been driving for over 10 years. It’s a huge passion of mine and I take it very seriously. Well, about a month ago, I pulled off a highway to take a look at an old car that was sitting behind a building. It was a Saturday afternoon and the parking lot was devoid of people. I took my time looking at the car. It wasn’t anything special, but it had some old-school charm. I put my car into reverse to leave and all of a sudden I hear a crunching sound. I look in my rear view mirror, nothing. I look in my sideview mirror and there was a white van squished up against my driver’s side rear quarter panel. There was no one around me the whole time I was behind the building. “Where did this guy come from? Why didn’t he honk his horn? He had to of saw me backing up, right?” All of these thoughts rushed through my head. I got out of the car and promptly asked the guy my questions. His answers were less than satisfactory, so we shook hands and I left.
I was so mad. I’ve been driving for 10+ years and this was my first accident where I was at fault. I felt completely incompetent. My perfect driving record ruined. Not only that, my car had an embarrassing dent on the driver’s side rear quarter panel. Looking at the dent only reinforced my feelings of incompetency as it made the car look like it had an incompetent owner. There was no other choice but to swallow my pride and accept the fact that I made a mistake. Lesson learned, I should’ve checked my mirrors.
Something interesting happened today. I walked by my car, glancing at the dent and I felt a smile grow on my face. I saw a car with a story. I saw a car that had been in battle and now lives to tell the tale. That dent was a battle wound and the car lives on!
I think the same is true about our lives. We all make mistakes and get banged up. It will happen. This, at times, can be really embarrassing. You wish it never happened or you want no one to know. But just like my car’s dent, the embarrassing dents (come on whose got only 1 dent?) in your life will tell stories. They will tell the stories of the battles you’ve fought and how you came out victorious. These dents will tell about God’s faithfulness, goodness and how He has changed your life.
What are some dents in your life? How has God changed you? How has God shown his faithfulness and goodness? What stories will your dents tell?
