About 4 months ago I made a big decision in my life. I had been dating a girl for nearly 5 years and I knew it was time to move the relationship forward. As a result, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me! Obviously, there was a lot more forethought and planning that went into the proposal, but that’s a story for another time. She said, “Yes!” and we took one step closer to becoming one.
Needless to say, we’ve been knee deep in wedding planning. Colors, invitations, flowers, venues, guest lists and more have been on our mind. One of the most enjoyable things my fiancee and I have done thus far was make our Save-the-Date. Usually this is a card that the future couple sends out to the invited guests but, when we were planning and thinking about our relationship, we decided to do something different: we made a Save-the-Date video!
Yes, a video! Thankfully, I had an assortment of GoPros and other video gear that I frequently carried around with me in order to capture life’s moments. Little did we know how handy all that video footage would be when making our Save-the-Date! As I parsed through nearly 2 TB worth of video footage, I stumbled upon memories from our relationship that we had both forgotten. We even had video of my fiancee and I before we were dating! How special.
We found a cute song and edited the clips into a 4-minute highlight reel of our relationship. It was so special to see how we had grown from meeting in college to graduating and moving into the working world. Moreover, what we saw in the videos was God’s faithfulness in our personal lives and our relationship. It was encouraging to be reminded of how the Lord has been there each step of the way, holding us together.
I think everyone needs a highlight reel. We all need to make an effort to look back, not at the bad things as we do too often, but instead at the moments where God has revealed himself to us. Knowing this, what would your highlight reel look like? When has God shown His goodness to you? When has He touched your life? When has He provided for you and your family? When has He loved you? I’m sure as you look back and see the highlight reel of all God has done in your life you will be encouraged and hopeful for what’s to come.
