Hard as Rock

I recently spent a little over a week in Las Vegas for business. I was able to plan the work trip out in a way that allowed my brother to join me in Las Vegas for a couple of days. Then the two of us went on a little road trip to see one of the most visited national parks in the United States, the Grand Canyon.

There is no other way to put it; the Grand Canyon is GRAND! It’s so enormous, that it’s very difficult to get a sense of scale. Rocks are the size of houses, apartment complexes and cities. Yet, what lies at the bottom of this gargantuan canyon is, in comparison, a seemingly small river.

At 1,450 miles long, the Colorado River is the 46th longest river in the world and ranks 38th in the United States based on water volume. Further, the river’s average width is only 300 feet. The Colorado River is not the largest, widest or most powerful river by any means, but one look at the Grand Canyon and its affect is evident. This river has made the grandest canyon on earth.

I sometimes hear people say things like, “So and so’s heart is hard as a rock. He/she will never change.” Or “That person is stuck in their ways. Their heart is like stone.” We have the common understanding that rock is an impenetrable substance that can never be changed. Indeed, rock is very durable and hard, but over time, as I’ve seen at the Grand Canyon, rock is still malleable. Enos Mills captured this when he said the following, “Given enough time, nothing is more changeable than rock.” Likewise, that person in your life who you think has a heart that’s as hard as a rock; their heart can be softened, molded and changed. Sometimes it might take more time, but no one’s heart is too hard that it cannot be changed.

I want to encourage you to spend some time today praying for that person that you think has a rock solid heart. Pray that the living water that flows from the Lord would mold, shape and change their heart to be more like His. God will surely make their hearts Grand!
