I’m a big Marvel movie fan! I admit, I was never into the comic books, but watching the comics come to life on the big screen is an awesome experience. I love how each character has their own unique superpower(s) and how each movie ties into the next and it’s not just movies. Marvel has released numerous tv shows, some that continue where the movies left off and others that don’t. Nonetheless, all of them build the Marvel universe.
It wasn’t long before I was hooked on one of those tv shows. I watched Agents of Shield regularly for several months as it was super entertaining. In one of the episodes an event took place that revealed some truth that I want to build on. **SPOILER ALERT** You’ve been warned!
The main character, Skye, is a human-alien hybrid (her dad, a human, and her mom, an alien). Most of the show is comprised of Skye searching for more information about her origin as she was not raised by her biological parents. Fast forward 1.5 seasons and this search leads Skye to an ancient, underground alien city. While in this city, she becomes trapped in a room and an alien device is detonated that releases a mist. Skye is exposed to the mist and is instantly covered in a rock exterior. Moments later, the rock begins to crack and shatters off of her. Skye emerges from the rock in a glorious light. On the exterior she looks exactly the same. However, deep within her DNA, a transformation has taken place. A dormant alien gene was triggered by the mist, unlocking the ability for Skye to control the vibrations in matter. She is now powerful enough to generate earthquakes.
You are probably wondering where this is going, but trust me, keep reading.
When transformation happens, it is not a question of if it happened, but rather, do I believe it has happened? A verse that has been hugely powerful in my life is 2 Corinthians 5:17 which says, “If anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation. The old is gone, behold the new has come.” In the original Greek, the phrase, “new creation” means “something that never existed before.” When you are in Christ you become a person that never existed before, a completely new person.
I know you are probably saying, “Well, I don’t feel new or feel changed. Then, I must not really be changed.” I want to suggest that, in the same way that Skye’s transformation was not up for debate, neither is yours. Skye encountered the mist and her DNA was changed. There was no reversing it or going back. It was a final change.
Similarly, if you have given your heart to Christ and surrendered your life to Him, you can be confident that He HAS made you into a new creation. The change has already been made. There is no going back. You are no longer just trying to stop certain behaviors, but rather you are discovering your true identity, the new creation that God has made you into. As a result, you discover the “super” Spirit that lives within you and the power that flows from Him. I wonder, how many Christians are walking around, without having access to God’s power, not because they don’t have it, but because they don’t believe they have it?
There are times when I don’t feel like I’m a new creation. This can be an unpleasant experience, but it’s in these times that I chose to stand on God’s word over my feelings. I thank God that I am a new creation. I thank Him that He has transformed me. I thank Him that He has washed me clean and made me whiter than snow. I speak this out loud over my life. God’s word is more true than my feelings.
Is this something you can relate to? I want to encourage you–when you hear the voice saying, “you are not a new creation,” speak truth over your life, declaring you have been made new. The change has been made. All you need to do is believe it and watch as the Lord’s power will flow through you.
