I’m not really into old art. For instance, when I was in Paris a couple years back with a group of friends, we went to the Louvre and we asked the ticket lady, “How long would it take to see a good portion of the Louvre?”
“Oh for about 3-4 hours, you would be able to see a lot!”, she responded.
We looked at each other, and looked back at the ticket lady, “Umm how much can we see in 1.5 hours?” Let’s just say we made a beeline for Mona Lisa and then we left. So old antique art isn’t really my thing…but modern art is really fascinating!
A couple weeks ago I was walking around the modern art section of the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art. I know there can be some modern art that is rather puzzling…looking very similar to chicken scratch. Other modern art pieces are really interesting and thought provoking and then others are…um…weird. They are just strange and twisted and all of this got me thinking, “Wow, a person’s mind made this painting.” As I continued to think about it, I came up with the phrase titling this post: Art reveals the Artist. Questions come to mind when I look at these pieces of art: what kind of things did the artist dwell on, think about, reminisce of that would develop this piece of art? What kind of life experiences, beliefs and values did this artist have that would lead them to create this piece of art? I believe the artist puts a part of them self into the art they are creating. Therefore, looking into the work of art, you get a glimpse into the mind and heart of the artist.
God is a masterful artist as well. He’s the one who created heaven and earth and everything in between. I believe if we look at God’s works of art and ask the same questions as mentioned above, we could learn a lot about how the Lord thinks, what He believes, what He values and how His heart beats.
Take for instance the animal and plant kingdom. Scientists have so far, described about 1.9 million species. 1.9 M I L L I O N, and we are finding new species every year. Scientists named 18,000 new species in 2014 alone. So much variety! I believe this reveals the creativity of God. How can you make 1.9 million species, all different, all unique and not be creative? Not only that, I believe He cares about the details. Have you ever seen the spots of a leopard and a jaguar? So similar, yet, when you look at the details, the spots are different. God values the details, the little differences that make the animals unique. If He cares about the spots on the leopard and jaguar, how much more does He care about the details (spots) in your life? The little things that go easily unnoticed. God sees the details and He cares about it all.
We could go on and on, but I want to challenge you to learn one new thing about the mind and heart of God through His works of art. I’d love to hear what you discover!
