Too Big for a Book

I had a neat “light bulb” moment the other day. I was writing the About section for fingerprintss.com and I really wanted it to sound like me. I wanted people to read the little blurb and get a sense as to who I am, my personality and to the purpose of this site. So, I spent a couple hours writing and I had a solid three paragraphs that I thought did a good job of summarizing fingerprintss.com through my voice.

I walked away from my computer and as I walked away I thought of all the other things I wanted to say about who I am. I also thought about how a person could perceive my relationship with God, “What if they think I’m a super Christian or lame or not spiritual enough?” And that’s when the light bulb went off…I’m a multidimensional human being! There are so many facets to me, different angles and unique pieces all woven together by a master craftsman. To try and sit down and write my heart and the purpose of fingerprintss.com into three small paragraphs is impossible. The three paragraphs capture less than 1% of who I am. The only way to really know me is to speak with me face to face, to hang out with me, to rub shoulders with me.

Now think about the Lord. The way he chose to reveal himself most fully was through a person… through Jesus. A living, breathing human being. God is not just a ghost floating in the sky, or a power, but he’s an ACTUAL person. Jesus came to reveal what God is like, to show us His fingerprintss. If my life can’t translate 100% to a piece of paper, how could Jesus’? All the miracles He performed, people He loved (all), places He went. John said it best, “that all the books in the world would not have room for all the stories (John 21:25)”.

Ok, what about us? I wasn’t born 2000 years ago! How can we know what God is like if Jesus isn’t here in the flesh? We do have the bible and that’s of utmost importance, but as mentioned above, it’s a book, and I don’t think it can 100% capture everything about God. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in the authenticity and infallibility of the bible, but I think God is bigger. Actually, He is, He’s I N F I N I T E ! God knows the best way to get to know someone is through relationship, that is why God has given us Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is not a power, but is just as much a person as Jesus is. That is why the bible references Holy Spirit as HE, not IT. We can speak with God, we can hang out with God, we can rub shoulders with God because of Holy Spirit. He walks with you, guides you in all truth (John 16:13) and lives inside you. I’m so thankful for Holy Spirit because it’s so much easier knowing a person by actually engaging with a person.

Is that how you see Holy Spirit? As a constant compadre (that word has been on my mind all day haha)? As a living, breathing person? Or not? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
